The Ponshukan Saké Tasting Room features nearly 100 types of saké from Niigata’s 90 breweries. Take your pick from among seasonal specials, staff recommendations, or whichever labels happen to catch your eye. All selections are arranged by geographic location.
Visitors can pay ¥500 at the door to receive a saké cup and five tasting coins. Sample up to five cups of saké or use multiple tasting coins to sample from a selection of premium saké.
As the microbrewery saké capital of Japan, there is no better place to experience saké than Niigata.
A Taste of Niigata
The Ponshukan Complex is an oasis for travelers using JR Niigata Station. The Ponshukan Complex’s marketplace features premium Koshihikari rice, rice snacks, saké, and a wide selection of Niigata sweets and gifts.
There is also a popular saké bar, original onigiri shop, and open dining space for tourists and locals passing through Niigata Station.

Kaku-uchi is a casual saké bar and deli located in the Ponshukan Complex. Enjoy a constantly changing selection of saké specials and filling side dishes.
Really Big Rice Balls
Our bakudan onigiri (“bomb onigiri”) are gigantic rice balls made from two servings of rice and mouth-watering fillings. Handmade with Japan’s best Koshihikari rice, these fun and outrageous onigiri are a longtime Ponshukan favorite.
Onigiri are made to order. Guests can choose from a selection of classic and unique fillings. We slow-cook our rice in a traditional kettle.
